# Asset State

This document details the use of the Asset State field within Service Desk Asset Management.

Every asset in Service Desk needs to be assigned a state of availability, called “Asset State.” This is an important property that indicates the availability of the asset and assists with planning asset allocation and procurement decisions in the organization.

Asset State denotes the different states of assets in the organization such as assets in Use, In-Store, or Expired. You can also enable or disable ownership and scan for custom asset states you create. You can also choose to mandate the ownership field while moving an asset in the custom asset state.

In addition to the Asset State data field within Service Desk, assets not “In Use” should be physically tagged in a very visible location with the appropriate color-coded sticker to assist with the rapid identification of every item’s documented Asset State.
